Batsmen hit form

06/08/2020 @ 09:44

Three players smashed half centuries as Newtown’s batsmen hit form at Pontesbury in the John Rees Division One.

After being put in to bat, John Anthony (80), Tom Foulkes (75) and Tom Anderson (56) all enjoyed time at the crease as Newtown set a huge target of 316-5 to chase from 40 overs.

It was enough to secure a 102-winning margin with the hosts making just 216-8. Anderson and Anthony took three wickets apiece.

Montgomery’s struggle for runs was evident at Shelton where they were bowled out for just 89 chasing the host’s 195-6 in the Shrewsbury & West Division Two.

In the Wales & West Division, evergreen Allan Williams was the pick of the Guilsfield & Llandrinio bowlers after they recorded a first win at Montgomery II in a low scoring game.

The medium pacer took 4-17 and was supported by left arm spinner, Gary Griffiths (2-5), pacemen Jacob Lloyd (1-7) and Dave Court 1-24 as the hosts were restricted to 79 all out.

Sam Griffiths led the reply with a quick 21 before wickets fell, allowing skipper Dave Lewis (29no) to steady the ship and arrive home for the loss of six wickets.

Daniel Lewis hit 69 as Llanidloes posted 168-5 for Newtown II to chase, and it went right down to the last over.

Andrew Jones also made 29 as Llanidloes gave Newtown II plenty to do, and with 14 needed off the last over, Eogan Jones held his nerve with the ball to secure a five-run win. Harry Turner led the attack with four wickets. Matt Humphreys (26) top scored for Newtown.

Welshpool were beaten at Bishop’s Castle who made it two wins from two in the process.

Paul Chapman made 33 as Welshpool could only muster 87 after being put in to bat, with the hosts cruising home in the 24th over for the loss of four wickets.
