Welshpool win sets up top two clash

09/09/2020 @ 12:02

Welshpool and Llanidloes set themselves up perfectly for this weekend’s first v second battle in the Wales & West Group by winning their matches.

Welshpool breezed past Bishop’s Castle who could only muster 38 runs after being put into bat thanks to some superb bowling across the attack. It was no problem for the league leaders who cruised to an eight-wicket win.

Llanidloes maintained their winning run after restricting Newtown II to 116-7 off their 35 overs. The visitors struggled for runs and were indebted to Matt Humphreys (62) for bolstering the score. Harry Turner took 3-31.

Dan Brown was in top form as Guilsfield & Llandrinio bounced back from a couple of defeats to overcome Montgomery II. Brown hit an unbeaten 85 as the hosts amassed 164-8, but Rob Yewdall made a game of it with a fine mid-order 44 as his side finished 17 runs short.

Wickets were shared around the Welshpool II bowling attack as they continue to top the Border table thanks to a four-wicket win at Chirk, who were dismissed for 123. Ryan Preston then hit 66 in response to lead the charge to victory.

Tom Anderson and Joe Monk combined to spur

Newtown

onto victory and maintain their dominance of John Rees Division One.

Anderson took 4-25 and Monk claimed 3-22 as Newtown restricted Pontesbury to 125 all out in the 31st over.

Ryan Davies led the response, finishing unbeaten on 34, with opener John Anthony contributing 32 to see Newtown home in the 32nd over for the loss of five wickets.

Sam Williams hit an unbeaten 55, and was supported by Rob Bennett (39no) and Charles Clinton (35) as Montgomery set a decent looking 173-5 for Shelton to chase in Shrewsbury and West Division Two.

But it wasn’t to be enough, with the visitors batting well to secure a six-wicket victory in the 37th over.
