Fan ban will continue

The Welsh Government has delivered another blow to local football by saying their ban on fans at grounds will continue.

There was hope that limited numbers may be allowed to return to grounds alongside tier two clubs, like Guilsfield and Llanidloes Town, having the green light to launch their competitive seasons soon, but the ban continues.

“The situation will be kept under review,” said a Welsh Government spokesperson last night.

“We will continue to make decisions based on the position in Wales with public health the priority.

“The First Minister has just announced a tightening of restrictions, so Wales is in the equivalent of level 3 in Scotland and England, where spectators are not allowed."

England has allowed fans back into its grounds, but clubs in the JD Welsh Premier like Newtown have been left frustrated by having to turn away spectators.

Clubs in the second tier of football have now been given elite status by Sport Wales, meaning that they too can return to league action with an announcement as to when expected this week.

It also means that clubs at the grass roots level cannot allow people to watch their friendlies.
