Welshpool’s Jim Roberts inspired his Team GB Wheelchair Rugby side to a tremendous gold medal today at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Roberts has been the team’s star man throughout the tournament, and shone in a thrilling final against favourites, USA, which Team GB won 54-49, with Roberts top scoring with 24 tries.

The match was tight throughout but Team GB earned some breathing space in the final quarter to secure the victory.

One of the first to congratulate Roberts and his team was Welshpool Rugby Club who Tweeted: “What a game. What an achievement. Massive congratulations to Jim Roberts and Team GB on their gold medal from everyone at the club. Give Jim the keys to the town!”

Born and raised in Welshpool, the 33-year-old is now expected to leave the sport at the conclusion of the Games to pursue a career in architecture, which he has been balancing with training commitments at Lilleshall, in Shropshire.

On the way to the final, a Roberts-inspired Team GB defeated the host nation Japan.
