High School boys are Powys champs

Welshpool High School Under-18s are Powys champions after beating Llanfyllin 2-0 in the final.

They reached the final after wins against Newtown High School and Ysgol Calon Cymru in the previous rounds and faced Llanfyllin High School in the final.

This was a replay of the final that was started before Christmas, however the match got abandoned after 50 minutes due to a nasty head injury.

This time around the full 90 minutes were played and it was a competitive encounter, with both sides giving it their all.

There was a strong wind all through the game and Welshpool failed to make the most of it in the first half, despite a number of good chances. In an end-to-end game the score remained level until 65 minutes, when a good counter attacking move led to the first goal through captain, Josh Griffiths.

This settled the team down and a second goal from Ryan Edwards soon followed and made up for his penalty miss earlier in the game. Welshpool remained steady for the final part of the game as it finished 2-0 and now face a trip to Ysgol Dinas Bran, Llangollen in round of 16 in the Welsh Cup.

A spokesman for the school said: “We would like to thank Welshpool Town Council for their support over the last few months as both the Welshpool Town and Waterloo Rovers pitches have been used during the U18s successful campaign.”
