Pool season breaking ground

24/08/2010 @ 01:40

Mywelshpool has teamed up with the Andrew’s Fish Bar Welshpool & District Pool League’s Chairman Dave Gannon to bring you an extensive preview for the upcoming season.
Your break Mr. Chairman....:
The unique combination of seven new teams entered this season with those who’ve folded, has presented the committee with some interesting choices to make. The committee has followed a consistent pattern of confirming the existing promotions and relegations, whilst now also promoting the teams that achieved runner up spots as the league numbers have expanded sufficiently enough to allow it.
The Socialites and Cock Brockton therefore gain promotion to the top flight, whilst Argae Hall B and now the Herbert Arms also are confirmed as Division Two teams. The Lion B (3rd in Division 3 last year) are also promoted and the Talbot D and Jockey Colts (new teams) go straight into Division Two, as it is felt the quality of these new teams are better suited to this division.
With all that in mind, who’s gone where I hear you ask?
Last Year’s Divisions One Champions, the Lion A Westbury, will start the new campaign without the ever steadying presence of Barry Emberton and Paul Richards, who sign for the Angel A and Breidden respectively. They have drafted replacements in the form of Late Davies and Danny Sumner for the eagerly awaited first defence of their title.
The Angel A might be the team to watch this year as they recruit Ryan Jones (Cobra) and Barry “Baggins” Evans as well as Barry Emberton (Lion) to their ranks; if new captain Justin Williams can keep his squad happy they more than enough talent to go all the way...
The Angel B have acquired Steve Jones (Nomads) but new captain Geraint-Trevor Jones will have to cope without last year’s big names of Mike Bebb (yet to sign for anyone...), Lee Harris and Drew Hughes. Lee and Drew have joined the new “Super stars” team at the Talbot captained by Alan “Beefy” Jones, with Andy Francis & Andy McNinch (formerly Nomads), Johnny Jerman and Mitch Harris forming the exciting new team (Talbot D) in Division 2.
The Cock A Forden add Alan “Boxie” Davies but lose Mark Woosnam (Castle Boys) and Paul Grisdale (Welly Wizards) as they attempt to improve on fourth place, and the Nomads sign Alan Pryce (Courthouse) and Neil Pritchard as they continue to rebuild. Cobra Meifod lose James Gittins (to Four Crosses A) as well as Ryan to the Angel, but they do sign Mark Jones (Castle F) as fine compensation.
Division One new boys the Socialites could add Adi Davies to their ranks, but the Cock B Forden haven’t given up on his continued services this year so I guess time will tell on this one. The Castle Boys meanwhile are firmly set on regaining their Division One status and add Mark Woosnam, John Roberts, Tudor Jones and Martin Thomas to fully bolster their side.
Leaving the squad to return to town are Shaun Humphries and Steve Day as welcome additions to the Talbot Top Dogs. Hywel Lloyd also “comes home” from the Green Dragon Buttington.
This season is expected to be more competitive than ever and has the addition of a youth league to look forward. All the very best of luck to our new teams namely, the Punchbowl B, the Lion Llansantffraid, the Callow Inn, Talbot D and the Jockey Colts (Horse & Jockey) with also a special welcome back to the Mermaid and Green Dragon Mount Street Welshpool.
