After three outstanding swims for a hat-trick of fourth placed finishes for Dan Jones and Team Wales in the swimming relays, he will join fellow Welshpool athlete Adele Nicoll in going for individual glory today at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In what will be an immensely proud morning for the town, particularly the pair’s incredibly supportive families, Dan will swim in the 50m freestyle heats this morning (heat 9 at 10.51am), while Adele will be looking for a new personal best throw in the shot put qualifying from about 11am.
Dan has been a revelation in the Team Wales relay efforts, just narrowly missing out on bronze in the Mixed 4x100, Men’s 4x100m and then last night’s dramatic 4x200m when the Welshpool swimmer swam an unbelievable third leg, setting a new personal best of 1:48.7 as they broke the Welsh record by five seconds. He can now focus on the individual events.
It will be a dream come true for Adele when she pulls on the Wales vest this morning for her much deserved Commonwealth Games debut.
After joining Team GB in the bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics earlier this year, Adele’s shot put distances have just got better and better so will we see the best yet from the 25-year-old today? It won’t be for the lack of trying, that’s for sure.
And that’s not it for the area today either! Montgomery's Caroline Taylor (left) is captaining the women’s pairs today for their first-round match with Canada. The women’s bowls team is managed by her Berriew bowling clubmate, Hazel Wilson (right).
