Olympic taster for Welshpool, Llanfair starlets

Two young athletes from Welshpool and Llanfair High Schools will represent Wales tomorrow (Thursday) at an elite national championship.

Hockey star Lucy Davies (Welshpool) and athletics hopeful Catrin Thomas are among 12 Powys youngsters who will take part in the Sainsbury’s UK School Games, which is being covered by Channel 4 to be screened on September 18.
 
More than 1,600 athletes are expected to take part at the event which has a programme designed to replicate the feel of major event such as the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. It will run every year leading up to London 2012.

Competitions are held in 10 sports across three locations - Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland - and runs until September 5.

The Powys athletes are representing Wales in a variety of sports and all have earned their caps through previous qualifying rounds. They are:

Ffion Butler, Newtown High School (swimming); Lucy Davies, Welshpool High School (hockey); William Sturgeon, Gwernyfed High School (fencing); Martha James, Gwernyfed High School (fencing); Adam Jones, Brecon High School (athletics); Cynfelyn Nancarrow-Lei, Crickhowell High School (swimming); Kirsty Powell, Builth Wells High School (judo); Ffion Price, Llandrindod Wells High School (athletics); Phoebe Richards, John Beddoes High School (hockey); Daisy Smith, Llanidloes High School (hockey); Catrin Thomas, Llanfair Caereinion High School (athletics); Lauren Thomas, Llandrindod Wells High School (judo).
