Swalec League – Division 2 North
COBRA 29 – 21 Abergele
COBRA continued with their bright start to the season with a bonus point victory over league newcomers Abergele at Cae Cobra.
COBRA started the first half with venom and put Abergele under constant pressure.Surging drives by the forwards and crisp handling by backs allowed COBRA to open up a 13-0 lead in the opening quarter. No 8 Alun Jones broke the Gele backline to score the opening try after strong carries by the forwards had the defence back pedalling.
COBRA continued to exert pressure and the second try came when full back Sion Wyn Williams crossed. Neither try was converted but COBRA kicker Geraint Williams and Abergele’s Danny Lawrence kicked three penalties apiece send the hosts in at the half 19-9 up.
COBRA started brightly and prop and captain, Andy Evans, scored the third try from close range to open up a 24-9 lead. COBRA continued to make inroads and create chances against a tiring Abergele side but failed to capitalise, as errors and poor decision making halted their progress.
In the final 10 minutes Abergele reduced the arrears with a try from Ashley Wynne. COBRA regrouped to score their fourth try through second row Garmon Evans, which was just reward for his willingness to ball carry throughout the game. Abergele scored the final converted try from a flowing attacking move.
Head coach James Watkin said: “The margin of victory should have been greater as a number of try scoring opportunities went begging. There were also too many failed kicks at goal and lapses in defence.”
