The best snooker and pool players in the area will come face-to-face with the game’s greatest ever player tonight when Steve Davis (right) holds an exhibition night.
The sold-event, being held tonight at Newtown’s Elephant & Castle, will see the six-time world champion play nine frames against county players, interspersed with a variety of trick shots and anecdotes about the game.
There will also be a warm-up performance from local star Wayne Smith, of Llanfair, who is the former World Trick Shot Champion.
Dave Gannon, chairman of the Andrew’s Fish Bar Welshpool & District Pool League, will be among the 300 or so people expected: “This follows on from the very successful Jimmy White and John Parrot evenings. It will be another great night of entertainment and skill from Steve and Wayne. How many times are you going to have the chance to see a six-time former World Champion and a World Trick Shot Champion entertain you on the same night?”
Davis, 53, has won more professional titles in the sport than any other player and was the world number one for seven years in the 1980’s and reached eight world finals, becoming the sport's first millionaire.
Though he has not won a major tournament since 1997, Davis continues to play snooker at a high level. He was still ranked in the world's top 16 at the age of 50, and is ranked no. 23 for the 2009/10 season. He is now an established television analyst and occasional commentator for BBC’s snooker coverage.
