Welshpool ‘wants local policy’

Technogroup Welshpool manager Chris Herbert has hit back at the critics following his recent signings by insisting the club must instil a long-term ‘local’ policy.

The boss has been active in the transfer market since taking the helm six weeks ago but says he has been shunned by the local players he has approached due to the club’s previous mistakes.

However, he says he will be back knocking on the doors of local talent in a bid to galvanise a Welshpool side that will represent the town.

“I have spoken with a lot of local players who would have been good enough to get in, but they won’t even entertain the idea,” said Herbert. “It’s because the lads have just been ignored or treated badly by previous managers at the club which has made it really difficult for me to get good local lads in.

“I’m trying to get crowds back. I remember as a player coming to Maesydre and there was always between 150-250 spectators watching. Believe me, it is like having a extra man on the pitch for the home side. It intimidates sides. So I’m hoping if the fans like what they see they will be there week in week out and obviously the more money through the gate the more money will be made available to improve the team.”

Herbert has himself been involved in launching a new web site for the club - www.clubwebsite.co.uk/technogroupwelshpoolfc - and says he will look at other community initiatives to win back the local public.
