Welshpool darts ace Gareth Ashley has thrown an incredible nine-darter, and has claimed that the local scene is in great shape thanks to rising sensation Luke Littler's performances on the world stage.

Ashley is one of the town’s most established players, but took the local level to standards normally only thrown by the world’s best players at the weekend.

Playing for Welshpool in the Montgomery & Radnor Super League against Builth Wells, Ashley sent The Green Dragon into raptures by following up two maximum 180’s with treble 20, treble 15 and then double 18 for the remarkable feat.

“The place went absolutely mental!” said Gareth, who said he is still on Cloud 9. “I’ve been playing darts for over 30 years and this is my first one.

“I’m not aware of it being done in Welshpool before, but I could be wrong. I was told it is the first one in the Montgomery & Radnor Super League, but again I can’t be 100% sure on that.”

The local darts league has been lit up this season by an injection of young players, and Gareth says teenager Littler, who has been incredible during his first season on the world adult scene, has been instrumental in promoting the game to a new generation.

“Darts in Welshpool is very much on the up, finally,” he said. “It will only get better with the Welshpool Premier League starting last year, combined with the young lads coming through now thanks to a certain Mr Littler!”
