Jones to launch a new era for Welshpool Town

Welshpool Town FC have announced the appointment of Gary Jones as manager, a local man who has spent the past two seasons with JD Cymru North side Chirk AAA.

He will take the helm of the Maes y Dre-based club in the MMP Central Wales League North, and will be supported by Ben Kinsey and Steve Bellerby in the management team.

The appointment comes as the club look to rebuild in tier four, following a challenging period in tier three.

The club said they were ‘delighted’ to welcome Jones and thanked previous manager and “club legend”, Russ Cadwallader, for his hard work.

“I’m excited to join Welshpool, anyone connected to the town knows the history of this club and I’m honoured they approached me to join,” said Jones.

“I understand that there is going to be a lot of work to get this club back to former heights, but I, along with chairman Chris Roberts, want to give the town a team they’re proud to come down and watch.

“The work club secretary Eva Bredsdorff does behind the scenes is something that enticed me to join. She has ambition and proven success with grant funding, delivering on projects like the new junior facilities, so it’s down to us to match this ambition on the field.

“I look forward to working with the committee to provide a pathway for the junior talent to the first team.”

Welshpool-based Jones added that one positive of the club’s new league status will be playing so many local derbies next season, facing the likes of Waterloo Rovers, Trewern and Berriew.

Chairman Chris Roberts said: “As soon as we spoke to Gary, we knew he was the right man to move the club forward. He brings a massive amount of enthusiasm, experience and knowledge of players, and above all he is keen to align the club’s strategy and plans moving forward.

“We are excited to open a new chapter for the club that will hopefully provide stability, and a pathway for our excellent junior section to thrive. We would like to thank Russ for his enormous efforts and for all the years he has worked with various teams.

“He is a club legend both on and off the field and deserves to have a well-earned rest. He will remain with the club in an off-the-field capacity.”
