Local businesses are being sounded out for interest in an ‘approved trader’ scheme.

Powys County Council’s Trading Standards team is asking traders if they would be interested if the council set up a ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme in the county.

Clive Jones, the council’s Professional Lead for Trading Standards, said: “We are consulting businesses to see if there is any interest in an approved trader scheme named ‘Buy with confidence’ which promotes traders in Powys who could then use this brand.

“The idea is that their customers could then have the reassurance that the particular trader has been audited and accredited by Powys-based Trading Standards officers.”

The Buy With Confidence scheme (www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk/) is a UK-wide government scheme is administered by local authorities.

If the scheme goes ahead in Powys, there would be an application fee of £100 for firms with under 50 employees and a yearly membership rate starting at £250 (for firms with under five employees), £375 (6-21 employees), £500 (21-49 employees), £1000 (over 50 employees).

These costs would be charged to over the administration of the scheme.

The council’s Trading Standards team is contacting those businesses it has contact details for. However, the council is keen to hear from as many businesses as possible.

If you’d like to give feedback on the proposals please email us at trading.standards@powys.gov.uk with your responses to the following questions:

Q2. Is the pricing structure correct?

If you do wish to comment, please contact Trading Standards by May 30.
