PRIME LAMBS (3610)

A entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 174.83ppkg, with a top price of 202ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 43.5kg making £88 from BE & BE Langford, Llettymeibion, and £96.50/head for 52kg lambs from AE Casewell, Bodynfoel.

Similar number of lambs forward sold to a reduced trade compared to last Monday, which would be in line with other local and national markets at the end of last week. Most demand was for the better meated lambs of any weight and the better shaped lambs in the export weight bracket (38-44kg). Also trade was slightly stronger for the better meated, better bred, white faced tup lambs.  Small well-bred lambs were again in better demand. Hopefully trade will improve in the lead up to the forthcoming Eid/Qurbani festival on the 12th August.

Lights (343) to 187ppkg from JP Jones, Gwastadgoed and JH Morris, Brynaber. Others to 183ppkg from AH Richards & Co, Tynant and JR & ME Roberts, Penarddlas. Average of 172.74ppkg.

Mediums (1630) to 202ppkg from BE &BE Langford, Llettymeibion. Others to 198ppkg from D Pryce, Llancowrid Farm and DD & MJ Evans, Pantywynthrew.  Average of 175.15ppkg.

Heavies (704) to 191ppkg from EW Jones & Co, Tytanyfoel. Others to 189ppkg from JM Price, Maeshyfryd. Average of 174.55ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (3497)

We saw another terrrific entry of 3373 cull ewes that sold to once again a solid trade. The top price of the day went to E & H Chapman, Morfodion with Texel x ewes to £121. Other top prices were DC Jones, Trefaes Isaf with £101 and £100 (x3).  The best Welsh and Speckled Face ewes were still very well sold, however the leanest and lightest of these were slightly harder work on the week. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is that cull ewes are shorn from now on as premium's are achieved. A respectable average of £55.30 was achieved with many smaller/lighter ewes present pulling the average down £4.55 to last week.

An entry of 49 cull rams averaged £56.37, with a top price of £79 from JH & ML Breeze, South Moelygarth.
