PRIME HOGGS (5514)
An entry of hoggs 5514 forward sold to return an average of 253.97ppkg, with a top price of 286ppkg for pen of hoggs weighing 43kg making £123 from Lythwood Sheep, and £138/head for 63kg hoggs from S Lane, New Hall.
A very large number of Hoggets forward due to the strong demand/prices and the increase in demand due to the Corona Virus Scare . A strong competitive demand throughout the sale for all weights and grades especially the better bred, well-shaped, well fleshed hoggs with plenty of these types selling to 270ppkg and above. Most demand was for the export and supermarket weights (39-48 kilos) with Butchers/Wholesalers and Major Retailers all reporting a sharp increase in demand as some households stock up with food in case the Virus causes shortages. Heavier weight hoggs sold to a similar trade to last week due to generally these weights going into the catering sector and with a lot of pubs and restaurants being closed or very quiet, demand was less. Lightweight hoggs sold to a very strong trade due generally to less numbers of these types being on offer. Overall an excellent trade throughout for all weights and grades. For further details on marketing of finished stock at this time, do not hesitate to ring the auctioneers.
