Vaping is a topic that has been back in the news recently with the Welsh Government banning the use of single use vapes to ‘reduce the environmental harm caused by their production and incorrect disposal’.
We have spoken to this week’s Business in Focus owner who has set the record straight by highlighting the role it has played in helping many local people to give up smoking.
Vape Express, based in Welshpool and Newtown, is a thriving business that is spearheaded by Isaac Richards, who has answered some challenging questions.
Who are you and how long have you been in business?
I’m Isaac Richards, founder of Vape Express. We’ve been trading for three years and now run two successful stores in Newtown and Welshpool, Mid Wales.
We actually started with a small stall inside the local market hall, helping a few customers at a time. Over time, word spread, and we slowly grew into one of the most recognised vape businesses in our area – something I’m incredibly proud of.
What made you want to open a vape store?
I saw how many people struggled to quit smoking, and how intimidating some vape stores felt. I wanted to build a welcoming space where customers could get real help, honest advice, and affordable options to support them in quitting cigarettes.
How has business gone?
It’s grown beyond anything I expected. We’ve gone from that single market stall to turning over more than £300,000 a year, with two busy stores and thousands of loyal customers. We’ve also expanded into CBD, wellness supplements, and hydration products – with more growth planned.
Do you believe it is helping to get people off smoking?
Without a doubt. We regularly see people cut down or quit entirely after switching to vaping. Many of our regulars were heavy smokers who haven’t touched a cigarette in months. It’s all about matching them with the right product and giving them support.
Do you worry young people are taking up vaping?
Yes, and that’s something we take very seriously. We have strict age verification in place and never sell to under-18s. The issue is often rogue sellers or glamorised online content – not reputable shops like ours. Proper enforcement is key.
How does the ban on single-use vapes impact the businesses?
It’s a challenge, as disposables are often the first step for smokers switching over. But we’ve been proactive – introducing easy-to-use refillable alternatives that are both compliant and sustainable. Education will be crucial as the changes roll out.
Does the industry need tighter regulation to stop rogue sales/businesses?
Absolutely. We fully support tighter regulations. We’ve always stuck to TPD-compliant, legal products, but we know some sellers cut corners. That damages trust in the industry and puts people at risk – it needs cleaning up.
What does the future hold for the business?
We’re expanding. Our long-term plan includes opening more locations and even franchising Vape Express across other regions. We’re also growing our product range to support a wider focus on health and lifestyle – not just vaping.
What else would you like to share with readers?
Vaping has helped thousands of people in the UK reduce or quit smoking. It’s not perfect, but it works. With the right support and regulation, it can continue to save lives – and we’re here to help anyone looking to make that switch, no judgment, no pressure.
