A recycling company has turned household waste into Christmas cheer in Newtown with a £3,000 donation to Kindness Events Newtown.
The money has been donated by Bryson Recycling through its Recycling Rewards Campaign which encourages people to recycle more while supporting local good causes. The firm operates the household recycling centres in Newtown, Brecon, Llandrindod Wells and Lower Cwmtwrch on behalf of Powys County Council. It donates £1 to charity for every tonne recycled at the sites.
Since taking over management of the centres in April 2025, more than 3,000 tonnes of material have been recycled. This resulted in the latest £3,000 donation to Kindness Events Newtown. The group organises free and inclusive celebrations for local people including the annual Kindness at Christmas event in the town.
Kindness at Christmas is organised by Powys Youth Service together with Cllr Joy Jones and the Kindness Events Newtown group. It is providing a free two day ice rink at Ladywell House car park on 19 and 20 December along with other festive activities aimed at tackling poverty with dignity while bringing people together.
Gareth Walsh, Head of Regional Operations at Bryson Recycling, said:
"We are delighted to donate £3,000 to Kindness Events Newtown through our Recycling Rewards Campaign. This scheme shows how recycling can do even more good, helping the environment while directly supporting the wellbeing of the communities we serve. We’re proud of the fantastic recycling efforts of Powys residents to date and look forward to continuing to work together to make a positive impact in the local area."
Cllr Jackie Charlton, Powys County Council Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said:
"The Recycling Rewards Campaign is a great example of how partnership working benefits everyone. By recycling more, our residents are helping protect our environment while also contributing to brilliant community initiatives like Kindness Events. We’re delighted to see this £3,000 donation going to such an inspiring local project."
Cllr Joy Jones, Powys Anti Poverty Champion for Powys County Council and Chair of the Kindness Events Newtown committee, added:
"We are incredibly grateful for Bryson Recycling’s generous support. Their donation contributed towards the funding of our ice rink at our Kindness at Christmas event, a welcoming celebration for the whole community. With the support of local organisations, businesses, volunteers and Powys Youth Service, we are creating a festive occasion that brings people together and offers kindness, dignity and a touch of magic for everyone."
