Local firms urged to bid for £83k town centre work

Welshpool Town Council is inviting experienced contractors to quote for the civil engineering and installation works needed to deliver the next stage of the Welshpool Town Centre Improvement Project.

The Council is preparing to install a range of new and replacement street furniture and public realm improvements at locations across Welshpool, supported by £83,000 from the UK Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund.

The proposed programme includes approximately 30 litter bins, 25–30 benches, 10–15 pedestrian wayfinding signs and totems, together with planters, protective bollards, new street trees and other public realm infrastructure.

The Council will be purchasing the principal items separately and is now seeking quotations from contractors to undertake the associated installation and civil engineering works.

This is expected to include removal of existing street furniture, excavation and foundations, installation of new items, tree pits, surface reinstatement and associated traffic and pedestrian management.

Town Clerk Richard Williams said: “We’ve spent the last few months developing the plans, working through the proposed locations and starting the process of obtaining the various permissions we need. We’re now getting to the point where we can begin preparing for delivery on the ground.

“There is quite a variety of work involved, from relatively straightforward replacement of existing benches and bins through to new foundations, wayfinding installations and works within the trunk road.

“We’d particularly like local and regional contractors with the right experience to take a look at the opportunity. The programme is tight, but the works can be delivered in phases as permissions are secured and the new street furniture becomes available.”

The works will take place at a number of locations including Broad Street, High Street, Church Street, Severn Road, Berriew Street, Brook Street, Union Street, Hall Street, Vicarage Gardens, Raven Square, Lower Powis Park and the Canal Wharf area.

Some installations will be within the A483/A458 trunk road environment and the successful contractor will therefore need suitable experience of highway works and traffic management.

The Council expects to appoint a contractor by the end of September, with individual elements then delivered in phases. All installation and civil engineering works are required to be practically complete by January 31, 2027, allowing February for final inspections, snagging and completion of the overall project by 28 February 2027.

The Request for Quotation closes on Thursday 10 September 2026.
