A Christmas cracker as school raises funds

The Friends of Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School are celebrating after raising a big sum of money.

The pupil’s games stall at the town’s Winter Festival got things going with £83.67 raised thanks to a £50 One 4 All voucher donated by the Post Office.

The school’s Christmas Fayre followed and thanks to an array of stalls and activities, an incredible £1022.52 was raised towards the purchase of educational resources relating to Monster Phonics.

“Goodness knows where to start with all the people to thank but we must start with the Friends for all the time and hard work that goes into organising such an event,” said a spokesperson.

“Also, to the staff and children for supporting the Friends so well on the night, including setting up, providing their own enterprise stalls and clearing away. To all our other stall holders for supporting such a worthy cause. Finally, to the community of Welshpool for your continued support - it means a lot!”

The Friends tell us how the money raised…

All classes got involved with their enterprise stalls whereby each class was given up to £50 to buy materials and ingredients for their goods to sell and then keep any profit to do something to benefit their class.

They were very inventive offering snow globes, snacks, baubles, decorations, cookie jars, biscuits, cakes, lucky dip and reindeer food.

The Friends were creative too, offering guessing games and by designing a Santa trail around the building with sweets as prizes for finding the pictures to form a Christmas phrase. We are grateful to Tesco for providing the sweets! A Christmas jumper swap was also on offer for anyone to get a free jumper.

The bottle tombola was extremely popular. The raffle generated lots of interest with prizes given from the following businesses: Alexander’s of Welshpool, Reflections Hair Dressers, Rikki Lloyd Butchers, Sidolis Cakes, Tanners Wines, The Raven Inn, The Owl and Broomstick, Hardy’s Bookshop, Rebalance Treatments, Cosmic Collectables, The Cornstore, Morrisons, The Owl and Pussycat, Mollies, Pure Beauty, Riffels, Serendipity Flowers, The Hair Studio, Welshpool Jewellers and Truly Scrumptious Bakes. Parents and teachers were also very generous by giving to the raffle and the tombola.

In a lighted up gazebo, under the starry sky, a beautiful atmosphere was created with the key stage two choir’s wonderful outdoor performance of Rejoice with Us, Jingle Bells, 12 Days of Christmas, Away in a Manger and Feliz Navidad.

Glittery Christmassy scenes came to life on children’s faces with a Friends parent doing face painting. Refreshments and Christmas themed sweet treats given by Applegreen were offered for those who wanted to relax.

Lots of children saw a very special couple, Santa and Mrs Claus in their grotto accompanied by some elves and had a gift from them.

What a night! It was wonderful to welcome so many members of the community through our doors and such a wonderful atmosphere - true Christmas spirit.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas!  Nadolig Llawen Pawb!
