Lonely tree lives on in mural

An outside area by the Llanfyllin Library building has had two iconic local scenes installed on the wall.

The murals depicting the famous lonely tree in Llanfyllin and the Lake Vyrnwy dam was painted by Brian Earp, from Llanfihangel.

Originally from Liverpool, Brian moved to the area with his wife on his retirement having spent many holidays in Wales fishing and walking in Eryri.

This is where Brian, 90, developed his passion for painting mountains and lakes. Having bought six acres of land with a badly silted lake and overgrown vegetation in the village of Llanfihangel, they soon turned it into a home within two months, and created a fishery stocked with 200 rainbow trout.

He now has his own studio situated on the bank of Valley Dam Lake overlooking the mountains.

Brian is entirely self-taught and has developed his own style of oil painting. Over the last few years, he has been attending the Llanfyllin Art Group.

In January 2023, Brian came to the Warm Hub organised by the Llanfyllin Wellbeing Group at Llanfyllin Library where the idea of the murals was discussed over a cuppa.

“The Llanfyllin Wellbeing Group would like to thank Brian for the murals and for allowing the group to exhibit his paintings in the building,” said a spokesperson.

The paintings can be viewed during library opening hours.
