From Llanfyllin to the top of Africa

A Llanfyllin student is on his way down from the highest point in Africa after summiting Mount Kilimanjaro for charity this week.

Sean Dockerty was born and raised in Llanfyllin, attending Ysgol Llanfyllin before pursuing his love of animals and taking up a zoology course at Bangor University.

The 19-year-old has been in Tanzania for the past week where he has joined a group of strangers who have come together to raise money for Hft who support adults with learning disabilities.

“We are immensely proud of him to go to another country with a group of people who he doesn’t know and to take on a challenge of a lifetime that not many people have the opportunity to do,” said his mum, Nicola. “He’s always full or surprises and does things when we least expect.”

Apart from wildlife, Sean has a love for the RAF and anything military-related, especially fighter jets, and can often be found watching them on the famous Mach Loop.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain above sea level in the world, at 5,895 m (19,341 ft) above sea level and 4,900 m (16,100 ft) above its plateau base.
