28/11/2025 @ 12:13

The steam locomotives of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway may currently be tucked away in their sheds and the stations silent, but the popular heritage line is preparing for a host of services through the festive season.

Leading the way will be the Santa Specials, an ever-popular pre-Christmas family day out with a short train ride in steam-heated carriages from Llanfair Caereinion to Cyfronydd, during which children will enjoy a visit from Santa and his elves with a gift for each child. Accompanying adults are not left out with a non-alcoholic hot drink and mince pie provided for each traveller, while the Llanfair tearoom will be open offering hot food and drink before and after train services.

Santa Specials are scheduled to operate this year on 6th and 7th, 13th and 14th and 20th to 23rd December.

They always prove highly popular and pre-booking is essential through the website, www.wllr.org.uk/your-visit/whats-on/, or by calling the railway on 01938 810441.

An extra attraction for the grown-ups this year are seasonal Afternoon Tea trains. Operating on Saturdays, 6th, 13th and 20th December, participants receive a picnic hamper which they can enjoy while the W&LLR’s specially adapted dining carriage while travelling on a one-hour return journey to the line’s intermediate station of Castle Caereinion, returning to Llanfair Caereinion in twilight.

Each hamper includes a choice of festive home-made sandwiches, savouries, slices of Christmas cake and mince pies, with tea, coffee and non-alcoholic punch also on offer. All Afternoon Tea train tickets must be pre-booked via the website or by calling the railway.

Finally, those wanting to escape the excesses of the season with a post-Christmas day out can enjoy the Llanfair Line’s Mince Pie trains. Operating from Llanfair Caereinion to Castle Caereinion between 28th and 30th December, the trains will include steam-heated carriages with mince pies and festive drinks also on offer.

These trains can also be booked through the website or by calling the office.
