Lake Vyrnwy charity cycle challenge returns

01/06/2026 @ 09:55

The Hope House Cycle Challenge is returning this summer after last year’s event was cancelled due to closed routes around Lake Vyrnwy.

The annual event raises thousands each year, with hundreds of cyclists saddling up to take on two routes - a 56-mile route to Lake Vyrnwy or a 70-mile distance to Lake Bala, which returns via one of the highest public road mountain passes in Wales in Bwlch y Gores, with a summit altitude of 545 metres.

The 2025 event was cancelled due to damage from Storm Darragh making part of the challenge’s usual route impassable but will return on Sunday, August 9 alongside a virtual challenge Cycle100 which was launched in place of last year’s physical ride.

“We are delighted to bring back our Cycle Challenge for summer 2026, kindly sponsored by RUK Group, alongside our virtual Cycle100,” said Hope House fundraiser, Harriet Richards.

“We know how much our cyclists look forward to this event every year and we can’t wait to welcome everyone once again to ride and to raise money which will help children with life-threatening conditions to live their best life.

“The day itself is also a fantastic celebration of cycling, fun and beautiful English and Welsh countryside.

“The Cycle Challenge is a very popular event and after a year off we expect sign-ups to come in quickly. Please don’t wait to book your space to avoid disappointment.

“However, if you can’t make the event, or are worried about completing the distance in one go, then the Cycle100 virtual challenge gives you the chance to ride 100 miles your way throughout the month of August – whether it’s on the road, at the gym, or even on a spin bike at home!

“You can cycle solo, with friends or family, or as part of a team - whatever works best for you.”

There are two ticket options for the Cycle Challenge: £25 entry fee plus a minimum £75 sponsorship; or £45 entry fee with no sponsorship requirement.

The Cycle100 virtual challenge is free to enter, with a suggested sponsorship target of £25.
