There are concerns this week over the future of the popular Wiggly Path which was previously the subject of a big public demonstration top save it in 2017.
Signs appeared last week asking residents not to use the path that links Red Bank to the town centre, prompting residents to ready themselves for another fight.
But the county council has reassured residents that they can still use the path for the time being, but access was restricted due to upcoming work on the former Ardwyn School which borders to entrance to the path.
Cllr Graham Breeze said he has received reassurances that it is not blocked, but says they have a long road ahead to ensure its future is secure after the county council told us the path is not recorded as a public right of way” so could be closed off at any point in the future.
“Delighted to announce that Powys County Council has admitted the Wiggly Path signs are an error and only relate to the school grounds,” said Cllr Breeze. “Now we must apply for a Right of Way by means of a Definitive Map Modification Order to protect the path.
A spokesperson for Powys County Council said last night: “The council is taking steps to secure the former Ardwyn Nursey School site whilst it is being decommissioned and to ensure that public safety is being maintained during this process.
“The council recognises that many residents use this path from the town to Red Bank and no physical barriers have been placed to prevent access to the path. However, the path is not recorded as a public right of way.
“The future of the site will be decided in accordance with the council’s Corporate Asset Policy.”
Back in September, 2017, dozens of protesters formed a human chain (pictured) to show support for the path which was closed by the county council, who then performed a u-turn following the public outcry.
