Welshpool: A wildlife wonderland

03/04/2024 @ 09:05

Wildlife experts are coming together in Welshpool later this month and they are inviting people to join them to learn how the area can improve as a wildlife wonderland.

Montgomeryshire Habitats Management Group (MHMG) are hosting a Symposium – Improving Habitats for Wildlife - on Saturday, April 13 in the COWSHACC in Welshpool where residents can learn how to improve wildlife in their surroundings areas.

Mark Avery, a knowledgeable, seasoned campaigner for wildlife, is the keynote speaker with other topics covered during the day including nature friendly farming, hedgerows, gardens, grassland, and ponds. A buffet lunch is also provided.

MHMG was established just over two years ago to provide a resource for discussion, information and support, and a means of communication with the sharing of ideas, for everyone interested in habitat creation and maintenance.

Since then, they have gathered 90 members, some of whom have enjoyed visits to a variety of habitats to experience and glean information and ideas to employ in their own patches, whether that is just a lawn, garden or farm or country estate, or something in between.

“Our visits have been to lowland and upland meadows, wet boggy areas, an area of coniferous woodland changing to deciduous, an upland bog, a community land management project and a nature friendly farm using traditional methods, all here in Montgomeryshire and we have planned further visits in 2024,” a spokesperson said. “We support our membership in carrying out management tasks and through working together we transfer skills within the group and communities.”
