“Victory for common sense” as speed limit finally done!

The introduction of a new 40mph speed limit through an accident blackspot near Guilsfield has been hailed as a “victory for common sense”.

In September 2022, MyWelshpoolTV highlighted the plight faced by residents in Groes Lwyd who described the junction outside Harding’s Garden Centre as a “catastrophe waiting to happen”.

They called for a speed restriction following a spate of accidents and near misses, and on the day we were filming, a huge timber lorry had to slam on its brakes to avoid rear-ending a car waiting to turn into the village.

Hundreds of residents then backed a petition to lobby for change and, on Monday, the new 40mph limit will come into force.

“At last, the introduction of the 40mph speed limit through Groes Lwyd is a victory for common sense and people power, and we have Groes residents and MyWelshpool readers to thank for it,” said Cllr Ian Harrison, the village’s County Councillor.

“Yes, Highways officials do listen, but it takes a Welsh Dragon roar to help them change their priorities. Huge thanks to the 20,000 readers who watched the video report, and to Mrs Susan Hales who got the ball rolling with her local petition.”
