Vandals strike at toilets and Maesydre playpark

Welshpool Town Council will meet with police to try and put a stop to vandalism in the town which has seen damage to the new toilets at the Tourist Information Centre and Maesydre playpark this month.

The local authority wants to ramp up CCTV coverage of the trouble spots following the latest damage, but one of the vandals has been caught in the act by the Town Council’s own camera and his image will be handed over to the local force.

The depressing news was shared with councillors at last night’s Operations & Development Committee meeting when Operations Manager, Paul McGrath, reported that the electric door to the new toilets had been “smashed”.

“Thankfully we have got them on camera and we have reported it to the police,” said Mr McGrath, who went on to add that the sensory play equipment at Maesydre had been damaged and could cost up to £700 to replace.

Cllr Bill Rowell added that the former Ardwyn school site was also being targeted by vandals.

Town Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, said that he was working with the Town Clerk to set up a regular meeting with the local police community team and would make the spate of vandalism a priority.

“I will certainly raise it because I think we could do with a heightened form of surveillance, either cameras or other means,” he said.
