A Welshpool woman who has opened her home and heart up to support young people has shared her story with MyWelshpool in a bid to encourage more people to do the same.
Juliet (surname withheld), a Supported Lodgings host from the Welshpool area, shares her home and supports young people (16-25) in Powys to live independent lives.
Over the past three years she has provided a spare room, shared experiences, and supported four young people to prepare to take their next steps in life.
“Watching them flourish and become independent young adults on their journey through life is a real highlight for me,” said Juliet, a Supported Lodgings host with Powys County Council. “That’s why I do it. Giving a temporary home to those who can’t be with their family, leaving foster care or at risk of homelessness is so rewarding.”
Juliet took her first steps into Supported Lodgings after hearing the positive effect it can have on a young person’s life from a friend.
Juliet, like many parents, leads a busy life, balancing work, family commitments, and hobbies, and she shares her life experiences with the young people providing them with valuable insights into real-life situations.
Councillor Sandra Davies, Cabinet Member for Future Generations, said: “Our Supported Lodgings hosts in Powys do a remarkable job in providing a room in their home to a young person and give them support, encouragement and guidance to develop the practical skills and confidence they need to live independently.
“I want to thank Juliet and the other individuals for devoting their time to supporting young people. This really is a fantastic opportunity for young people in need of support. People can and do make a big difference to their young lives.
“As a Supported Lodgings Host you will be making a real difference to a young person's life. In return, you will receive support from our Supported Lodgings Coordinators, access to a wide range of training, plus a weekly allowance.”
