Community call to back ‘Kids Eat Free’ initiative

11/08/2025 @ 08:13

The group of Welshpool eateries behind a fantastic initiative to provide free meals for children throughout the summer holidays has called on the town to back their initiative as it heads into the second half of the school holidays.

Hundreds of meals have already been distributed through the Inglenook Café, Nook Sandwich Bar and Andrew’s Fish Bar with each one taking it in turns from Monday-Thursday to “ensure that no child in Welshpool goes hungry”.

The initiative gave out 250 meals in the first week of the holidays alone, and it is hoped that with the backing of the community, Welshpool can rival the incredible effort served up by Newtown’s Garth Owen Fish Bar which dished up 5,000 free meals a few summers back.

“We are reaching out with a heartfelt appeal for your support as we launch a new initiative aimed at supporting the young people of Welshpool,” said Corey Eadson, on behalf of the teams working at the three eateries in a letter to local businesses.

“With the cost of living on the rise, many families in our town are facing increasing pressure. To help alleviate this burden, we have introduced a Kids Eat Free scheme – ensuring that no child in Welshpool goes hungry.

“This initiative is more than just a meal – it’s about community, dignity, and giving our youth the support they deserve. But to make this vision a reality, we need your help.”

Corey said that they are now seeking donations, sponsorship, or in-kind support from local businesses, individuals, and community groups.

“Whether it’s contributing financially, providing food, volunteering time, or helping to spread the word – every bit of support matters,” he said.

MP Steve Witherden has also shown his support by dropping in to meet the team last week and Mr Eadson added that “to show our gratitude, we will be recognising all contributors through our social media channels, community events, and printed materials”.

“Together, we can build a stronger, more supportive Welshpool – one where every child has access to a hot meal and the knowledge that their community cares about them.”
