Apartment block plans for quarry garage

Ambitious plans seen by MyWelshpool are set to transform a derelict Welshpool garage site into a new two-storey apartment block.

Next Wednesday, Welshpool Town Council will consider the plans submitted by Wyro Developments Ltd, a locally based home builder with projects across Mid Wales.

The plans include the construction of a 10-apartment block and the associated works that will transform the former Quarry Service Station on Brook Street, which closed in 2022.

It shows that the block will be set back from the road with parking to the front to avoid noise pollution from the main road, and the Design and Access Statement explains that the current buildings are “in a poor state of repair requiring significant investment for alternative business uses”.

They add that the proposed development has a variety of dwelling sizes for mixed occupancy that will “support affordability by design and decreasing household size occupancy”. The former rail track route will also be considered into any final design.

The developers would also need to address contamination issues caused by the former fuel tanks, but a similar problem has been overcome in Guilsfield on its former garage site that is now terraced housing.

The town council’s Events & Planning Committee will meet at the Town Hall on at 6.30pm next Wednesday.
