Welshpool’s former library building is undergoing a major solar power project that will cut emissions and save money, according to Powys County Council.

Workers have been spotted at Ty Maldwyn on the ‘Back Road’ in recent weeks, with the council confirming that the so-called UK Government’s ‘Levelling-Up’ fund created post-Brexit is being tapped into to cover the costs.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “As part of our commitment to delivering a Stronger, Fairer, Greener Powys, we are installing a 30.03kV Solar PV array and a 25kW storage battery at our Ty Maldwyn office in Welshpool.

“This project supports our ambition to create a greener future by reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency across our estate. It also demonstrates responsible use of resources, helping us to operate more sustainably and deliver long-term savings.

“Funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund, the installation is expected to generate over 27,100kW of clean energy annually, saving approximately £5,972 and cutting carbon emissions by 5,621kg each year. With a payback period of under five years, this initiative reflects our commitment to tackling climate and nature emergencies while building resilience for the future.”

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) is the government's domestic replacement for the European Structural and Investment Programme (ESIF).

It is designed to support local communities and businesses across the country, tackling regional disparities and driving economic growth. In Powys, the fund has been instrumental in creating a more prosperous and resilient county by addressing key challenges and seizing opportunities to support sustainable development.

Ty Maldwyn was originally purpose-built as a library, but closed before Covid to allow council workers to occupy the premises after the original council headquarters at Neuadd Maldwyn was transferred to a property developer for the new assisted living development complex.

The downsized library now operates out of a shared building with the Powysland Museum next to the canal.
