Call for a better ‘Welcome to Welshpool’

A Welshpool town councillor has called for better signage to be placed on the outskirts of the town to provide a better welcome for visitors to Welshpool.

Speaking at last night’s Events and Planning Committee meeting, Cllr Phil Pritchard said Welshpool should take a leaf out of North Wales towns like Colwyn Bay and Conwy to produce eye-catching signage that draws the passing traffic into town.

“The one thing we are short of in this town at this time of year is big signs saying ‘Welcome to Welshpool’,” said Cllr Pritchard.

“Other towns have them and they really stand out. Particularly in the North Wales coast area they have all their lights up saying ‘Welcome to Colwyn Bay, Welcome to Conwy’. And it stands out.

“When you look at Welshpool geographically, there are only five roads into this town so only five signs needed. I would love to see us plan to get the expenditure in to buy five signs like that. I think we should keep it in mind for the future.”

He proposed doing the signs just for the winter period of December and January with the signs going back up year-after-year, but Town Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, said the Town Council should investigate a year-round option.

“If it was all year round we would have to get the permission off highways authority, they may even have a budget to help us with town signage,” said Cllr Owen. “It’s a nice idea.”

Cllr Pritchard also attacked the state of the current signage, adding: “The county council do have Welshpool approach signs but the problem is they get lost in the hedges so you can’t see a thing.”

The committee agreed to have a more thorough discussion at the next meeting as it wasn’t an agenda item last night.
