Dozens of schools across Powys, including Newtown and Welshpool high schools and primary schools in Guilsfield, Welshpool, Berriew, Abermule and Montgomery, have announced either full or partial closures for tomorrow.
Red warnings for extreme heat have been issued as the hottest temperature ever recorded for June (36.1) was notched up today in southern England.
The usual common-sense warnings have been issued by emergency services to take care around wild water and when outdoor cooking, but schools have gone a step further by closing their doors for at least part of tomorrow.
The full list can be seen here, but one local school has explained why it will remain open.
Ysgol Llanfyllin Head, Dewi Owen, said: “As a school, we recognise the important service we provide to our community, families and pupils.
“Having assessed conditions in classrooms and communal areas, the management team has decided that, whilst we are all experiencing much higher temperatures than normal, it is in the best interests of pupils and the wider community for the school to remain open.
“Please ensure that your child comes to school with plenty of water and sunscreen. They may also bring a hat and sunglasses if they wish.”
This glorious sunny spell is expected to continue into the weekend when we can expect temperatures to ease with showers providing some welcome relief for our gardens.
