Welshpool is set to host a soft play area for young children inside the Town Hall this summer.
The much-needed facility will be welcomed by families, with the nearest such facility only available out of town at Coed y Dinas.
The news was revealed at the latest Operations & Development Committee meeting when Town Clerk, Richard Williams, said: “The word ‘softplay’ kept coming up in public consultations, so the best way to find out is to trial it. We’ll assess the demand and give it a go.
“The market needs to adapt and take in more footfall. This will bring people into the market hall. Parents and families would be coming through and hopefully shop in the market.”
He said the facility is a step towards ensuring the Town Hall is “a true hub and multi-purpose”.
“As a dad with two children under five this is something that I look for so it could attract more people into the town. The Town Centre needs more things like this,” he said.
The old café area has been earmarked for the project and the suggestion is to charge £1 per child, but it won’t be supervised and will rely on parents being honest.
The project will cost £3,000 and on completion of the trial period, an evaluation report will be presented to the Committee.
Mr Williams added that a discussion would be held with the Town Council’s insurers but made it clear that “parents are responsible, which is the same with our (outdoor) playgrounds”.
The proposal was warmly backed by a large majority.
