Warning after pair stuck in Lake Vyrnwy mud

One of our favourite local beauty spots has warned visitors not to venture onto its newly exposed shorelines after two people were stuck in knee-high mud.

The glorious summer we have enjoyed is having a knock-on effect to our water levels with Lake Vyrnwy reporting that shorelines that are under the water for the rest of the years should not be stepped on.

This follows a weekend incident when two people became stuck in knee-high mud. While they haven’t revealed how the pair got out, it has prompted a warning to others.

“Thinking of exploring the newly exposed shoreline? Please think twice,” they have warned.

“As the water level at Lake Vyrnwy has dropped in recent weeks, you may have noticed areas of ‘new land’ appearing around the reservoir.

“While it might look tempting to explore, this ground is normally underwater and is nowhere near as firm as it appears.

“This weekend, two people became stuck and came back covered in mud up to their knees. The exposed areas are made up of thick mud and fine silt, with some patches behaving like quicksand.

“If you step into the wrong spot, you could quickly find yourself trapped.

“For your safety, and to avoid placing additional demand on our already busy emergency services, please stay clear of these areas and enjoy the views from designated paths and access points.”

Rivers and lakes across Montgomeryshire have seen their levels slump dramatically this dry summer, but rain is expected over the coming days.
