Absolutely brilliant!

Welshpool, we are in for a real treat this September!

The Longest Yarn exhibition has arrived to the Town Hall as part of its two-year British Tour and for the entire month of September, it will be open to view with advanced tickets already snapped up by visitors from across the UK.

Yesterday, we were given a preview tour to see what we can expect, and it is truly incredible!

Organiser Alan Crowe (pictured) gave us a walk through the 80+ exhibits knitted by people up and down the country that provide an in-depth history of World War Two as you have never seen before.

From the declaration of war, through to the horrors of the frontline and finally peace in Europe and Victory in Japan, The Longest Yarn is a stunning history lesson that has been four years in the making. The attention to detail is truly astonishing.

And alongside the exhibition, Mr Crowe has also organised a Longest Yarn Fringe Festival with a number of events being held throughout the month of September (below).

The month-long exhibition will be launched at 11am tomorrow (Tuesday) with a piper leading visitors up the Town Hall steps. It will be open daily from 10am-4pm, and for just a minimum donation of £5, we think it is well worth the visit!

Longest Yarn Fringe Festival

The boxes have been unpacked and the astonishing exhibits are in place at the Town Hall which will be open daily from Tuesday from 10am-4pm.

But Mr Crowe has revealed that there will be a host of events all month coinciding with the exhibition’s arrival consisting of films, talks, plays and so much more.

This weekend will see a Vintage Fair in the Corn Exchange on Saturday followed by a Craft Fair on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, there will be a talk about policing in the 1940s at 2pm, and then on Monday 7^th there will be the showing of the film ‘One Life’, starring Anthony Hopkins as Nicolas Winton who rescued over 600 children from the continent just before WW2.

Among the other highlights of the Fringe Festival will be the play, Meet Tommy Atkins on Thursday 10^th at 7.30pm; the play Idle Women of the Wartime Waterways on Friday 11^th (3pm & 7pm in the Corn Exchange); a talk on Wartime Comedians on Tuesday 15^th (2pm); Behind Enemy Lines, a play about secret agents in WW2 on 17^th; a talk on the real war experiences of Arnold Ridley (Godfrey in Dad’s Army) 24^th; and a film & talk Carve Her Name With Pride on 28th.

A few tables remain for the Food & Drink Fair on September 19 & 20. Local producers are asked to contact the organisers (07782166342) should they want to exhibit.

A second Craft fair will be held on Sunday 13^th.
