Huge Children in Need coup for Welshpool!

26/10/2026 @ 10:45

MyWelshpool can reveal that next month’s massive Children in Need annual challenge has chosen Welshpool as one of its overnight stops!

The town’s rugby club has been asked to welcome BBC Radio 2’s Owain Wyn Evans as an end-of-leg venue on Wednesday, November 11, the third day of his five-day challenge to cycle 400 miles covering the four UK nations.

Owain will take on the greatest distance ever covered in a Radio 2 fundraising challenge.

Starting in Glasgow, Owain’s five-day cycle mission begins on November 9, and sees him pedal nearly 400 miles through Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and his home country of Wales, before his journey reaches a grand finale in central Cardiff on Friday, November 13.

On Wednesday 11th, he will cycle from Liverpool to Welshpool, with his finish line at the rugby club at around 6.30pm.

Club chair, Cheryl Biggs, said: “What an honour this is for Welshpool to be chosen so we need to make sure that we give Owain a big warm welcome after a long day in the saddle!”

Owain will be followed all the way by the might of the BBC TV and social media production team, bringing incredible national exposure to the town.

It’s another marketing boost with Welshpool already gearing up to host the Tour de France next July as a start point for its Day Three.

BBC Children in Need has raised over £1 billion since its first major annual telethon broadcast in 1980.

The live 45th annual appeal show in November 2025 concluded with an on-the-night total of £45,507,536, which later rose by £11.7 million from Radio 2 alone by March 2026 due to extended challenges like Sara Cox's 135-mile marathon run.

Owain’s challenge is already being heavily previewed on Radio 2 and along the way, he’ll experience and showcase some of the UK’s most spectacular scenery, taking in Scotland’s rugged coastline, Northern Ireland’s lush green landscapes, the wild weather of North West England and the rolling hills of Wales.
