Flooding chaos follows storm

The Welshpool area is mopping up today following extensive flooding caused by Storm Christoph which gave us a soaking for 24 hours.

The rain was relentless, and by late afternoon vehicles were getting stuck in local roads that are simply not able to cope these days with the affects of annual increased rainfall.

The Newtown and Oswestry roads were still closed this morning, with the former posing increased problems for the over 80’s age group in reaching their vaccine appointments at Maldwyn Leisure Centre.

The emergency services were busy through the night with Montgomery Fire Station posting that they were called twice at 4.54am and again at 7.47am to the Welshpool Airport straight along with crews from Welshpool to assist a car stuck in flood water and to occupants stuck in a property, with flood water entering.

Rail services have also been disrupted with the advice to check before travelling for the next two days.

It appears the storm has passed with the next few days showing some calmer, but colder, weather.

Last February, the area was hit by four successive weekends of heavy storms.
