Local high school children are being advised by Powys education chiefs to keep taking lateral flow tests for Covid-19 three times a week.
As positive case numbers of the virus continue to be high as the children all returned back to school this week in the Welshpool area, there is concern that that staff shortages could still play a destructive role in delivering education this term.
The current Covid wave is expected to peak in the next week or two, prompting the latest advice and guidance from Cllr Phyl Davies, the cabinet member responsible for education.
“We strongly encourage all staff and all pupils from Year 7 upwards to take LFD tests three times a week on a Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings,” he said, advising that the tests can be picked up for free from libraries, pharmacies or online.
He confirmed that open evenings and parent meetings will continue to be conducted remotely and that all sporting fixtures have been postponed until the end of January.
He also warned that “staff shortages may become an issue” and undoubtedly lead to a return to home schooling for some.
