Millions of people tuned in across the world last night to watch the debut of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, and local viewers will have recognised a familiar singing voice in the opening scenes.
The long-awaited documentary on Disney+ follows Hollywood A-lister Ryan Reynolds and his television pal Rob McElhenney as they purchase National League side Wrexham.
And as viewers settled in for the first episode, the unmistakable tones of local Singing Farmer, John Hughes, can be heard performing his own song Welcome to Wrexham, which was penned at the request of the celebrity pair.
“I was shocked to have received the call during one of the lockdowns,” a proud John told us last night, after being sworn to secrecy until the series was aired.
He was contacted by the show’s Emmy® and IDA award-winning producer John Henion, after, it is believed, the stars heard John’s song about trailer manufacturer Ifor Williams, who also sponsor the club, although our John is still keeping his cards close to his chest.
“We met up in lock down on the farm and worked on different songs,” he explained. “John Henion and his team were really supportive and I was so pleased to be involved in such a positive Welsh Football Club.
“I was shocked! I’m not sure I can tell you how they found me but it’s through a song I wrote in lockdown, and I am sure you can guess which one!”
As a fan of the club, John said it is an “absolute privilege” to be involved and is confident the pair will bring the glory days back to The Racecourse after some challenging years that almost saw the club go out of business.
You can catch John performing at various venues across the Welshpool area. He is no stranger to his songs being adopted and during lockdown the British Legion used one of his songs, while Farmer’s Weekly recently used another for their Awards Ceremony.
Welcome to Wrexham’s first two episodes were aired last night and more will appear over the coming weeks.
