Welshpool has a new Welsh running champion, and he is from a family that is no stranger to success on an international scale.

Seb Loxam romped home to win the Urdd National Cross Country Championships in Abertsywyth, with the Year 5 Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng (YGYT) pupil pulling away to win by some margin.

He is the nephew of Forden’s endurance runner, Andrew Davies, who has set numerous records and chalked up some amazing achievements in both the Welsh and Team GB vests.

Proud headteacher, Angharad Davies, said: “He’s a champion in his own right. An outstanding athlete!

“He kicked on and left the field by a few hundred metres for an unbelievable performance and we are immensely proud of him.”

It has been a successful time for the school’s aspiring sports stars with the girls’ rugby and football teams recently becoming Montgomeryshire champions.

At the same cross country event as Seb, every school representative finished in the top 11 of their age grades, with Sara Lloyd finishing fourth and just a few strides from a podium.

“YGYT would like to thank the children, parents and staff for their wonderful support of the weekend and it just shows what a close-knit school we are with incredible opportunities and talent, putting Welshpool on the map,” added Ms Davies.
