Castle safety pledge after falling tree hits cars

21/06/2023 @ 09:26

Powis Castle closed part of its car park this week to allow emergency safety assessments to be carried out after a tree fell and landed on six cars on Sunday.

Readers informed us of the incident, and one eye witness said “it was awful” but praised the response by adding “have to say it was dealt with quickly” and that “I’ll be back!”.

After six weeks of dry weather, the area has had a welcome sprinkling of rain and stronger winds which appear to have impacted National Trust-run property.

Their spokesperson at Powis Castle told us: “On Sunday, part of a veteran oak tree situated on adjacent land fell onto a section of the car park at Powis Castle and Garden. No people were harmed by the falling tree, but six stationary cars were damaged.

“The ongoing safety of all our visitors, staff and volunteers remains paramount and we are continuing to assess the tree and the surrounding area to understand the detail of what happened.

“The car park at Powis Castle and Garden was open as normal, on Tuesday, June 20.”

The Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mid Wales, and disappointed visitors said they were turned away on Monday due to being unable to park with the reduced capacity.

Visitors were advised to park in Welshpool and take the stunning walk through the park to the Castle instead, if they were able to.
