A Happy New Year for village pub!

31/12/2023 @ 09:53

The Welshpool area’s hospitality industry is set for an exciting 2024 after millionaire Mike Harris and his wife Rhian opened their latest venture over the Christmas period.

The pair have been investing heavily in the local trade, buying the Pinewood which is being completely transformed into a new pub for the summer, and also taking a 51% share in the Oswestry-based distillery Henstone, a business they want to expand and move to Welshpool.

But it is the opening of The Breidden in Middletown on Christmas Eve that has got the tongues wagging, with rumours that other vacant pubs in the area have come onto the couple’s acquisitions radar.

While they are keeping their cards close to their chest, with Mrs Harris only saying that there were “exciting times ahead”, the return of the once popular village pub as the Hogs Inn The Breidden has been warmly received.

Visitors have responded positively on social media, with one saying “thanks to everyone involved for bringing some much-needed life back to Middletown”.

Welshpool’s night time economy has been boosted this year by the Owl & Pussycat opening which has seen revellers return to town, and there are plans afoot for a major expansion of The Angel into the newly-purchased former Harrison’s building next door. The rebranded ‘Welly’ has also returned this year.

While Welshpool awaits news on The Talbot and the former Churchills premises, the signs are positive for a Happy New Year for the town’s nightlife.
