Go-ahead given to expand The Angel

A Welshpool pub’s plan to almost double in size to become a major entertainment centre with accommodation above has been approved by Powys County Council.

Craig Humphreys has purchased the former Harrisons Solicitors building next door to his Angel pub on Berriew Street, and wants to knock through to expand his hospitality business.

He also intends to convert the upstairs area into accommodation, providing much needed apartments for the town centre.

And last night’s Welshpool Town Council Planning Committee meeting was told that Powys County Council had approved the building’s change of use to a “drinking establishment with food provision and residential accommodation above, with alterations to the facade of The Angel Public House”.

Welshpool is going through somewhat of a renaissance to its night time economy with The Owl & Pussycat and The Welly both reopening over the past year. And another businessman, Mike Harris, has bought the former Pinewood which is undergoing a major renovation and is set to reopen this summer.
