Lambs left to die by heartless hit-and-runs on Welshpool estate

A farming family is appealing to motorists and dog owners to use their common sense after the latest incident of a new-born lamb being left to die after being struck by a car.

Liz Jones said that “this isn’t the first time, and I imagine it won’t be the last” after discovering the lamb on the side of the road that cuts through Llanerchyddol estate on the outskirts of the town.

The family have around 350 ewes there, with the numbers swelling considerably this time of year with new-borns.

“It’s not just baby lambs either, there have been ewes hit before,” Liz told us. “I can’t see how anyone can hit a lamb without knowing about it never mind a fully-grown ewe. On every occasion they’ve been left to die in the road which I think is appalling.”

The family also said that they have been verbally abused by reckless dog walkers letting their pets off the lead, with incidents of attacks on their livestock also on the up.

“The sheep get treated as a nuisance by both drivers and dog walkers on the park, no matter how many signs we put up people just ignore them.

“Nobody wants to see the animals they rear and care for hit by cars and left to die or be mauled be dogs. We have been sworn at and verbally abused for simply asking people to put their dogs on leads, in no other workplace is this acceptable but we have to just take it lying down.

“All we ask is that people respect the countryside and drive sensibly and keep their dogs on leads, I don’t see why people find that so difficult.”
