Welshpool to bid farewell to Norman

28/04/2024 @ 08:42

Welshpool has lost another of its favourite footballing sons after Norman Williams passed away, aged 77. His funeral will take place this Friday.

Norman was well known in local amateur football circles, playing with teams including Forden and Trewern, but he will be best remembered for his spells with Welshpool Amateurs and Welshpool Rangers, where he later became manager.

After his playing days were over, he also developed his skills as a physio and went on to serve Welshpool Town for a number of years, including their glorious early 1990’s era under the management of Clive McNamee and his assistant, Steve Pritchard.

He was one of three footballing brothers – with the late Clive and Keith (Wheety) also well known in the local game. The brothers worked together at Abi Carriers, before Norman went on to work for Floform until his retirement.

Norman, of Gungrog Road, Welshpool, has been a husband to Jeanette for 58 years and father of Sharron Booth, Beverley Gould and Alan Williams. He is also a grandad to five, and a loving great grandad to eight children. His one surviving sibling, Marilyn, lives in Australia.

The funeral service will take place at St Mary’s Church on Friday at 1pm, followed by interment in Maesgwastad Cemetery. Family flowers only and any donations will go to the British Heart Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Society.
