The Welly is back in business

The new landlady of The Welly has vowed to bring it back as a vibrant town centre venue after reopening its doors last week.

The pub was refurbished post-Covid, but closed last month. However, Jess Walters-Davies said she has taken it on, adding it to the Lion that she has ran in Newtown for the past 10 years.

“I’ve built The Lion up to be a successful pub and one of the most popular in Newtown,” said Jess. “I have four children, my eldest works for me at The Lion. I’m originally from Llanfair Caereinion but now live in Newtown and have done for the past 18 years.”

Jess has already introduced a new games machine and juke box, and has re-clothed the pool table, adding that “The Welly is a family-friendly pub and all are welcome”.

She said there will be live entertainment every Saturday night and has promised “lots more for customers so keep an eye out in the next few weeks”, adding that a Darts, Dominoes and Pool tournament will be held on December 8 from 3pm.

Welshpool’s pub trade seems to be bucking a national trend of closures. The Owl & Pussycat and The Bakehouse have been a welcome additions to the scene, while The Talbot also successfully reopened this summer. Major investment is currently happening to The Pinewood, which will re-open in 2025, and The Angel, which will double in size.

Opening hours for The Welly
