Housing plan for town centre “eye-sore” resubmitted 40 years later

Plans have been re-submitted to sort out an “eyesore’ area of the town, but there are concerns that a popular bus stop could be impacted.

Welshpool Town Council planners backed a proposal for two semi-detached houses on land adjacent to 1 Mount Street, but have concerns over the impact it will have on the bus stop in front.

“The bus shelter can’t be removed as there are a lot of people that use it. But, if it is removed, it must be replaced somewhere on Mount Street,” said Cllr Sally Fitzgerald at the latest Town Council Planning meeting.

Councillors were relieved to hear that something is finally happening on the site after Town Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, described it as an “eye-sore” and pointed out: “Planning permission was approved in 1985 and they started to build it, but abandoned it.”

Concern over the absence of a parking plan will also be shared with Powys County Council who will make the final decision.

“It will certainly look better than it does at the moment,” said Cllr Chris Davies.
