Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a lively auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday
OTMS (60)
An entry of 60 over thirty month cattle realised an average of 122.59ppkg, and 127.92ppkg for the younger cows. A Limousin cow weighing 806kg from R B Jones, Llwynobin, made £1346.02. Therefore Messrs Jones receives the Briarwood Products LTD prize of £25 for highest priced OTM on the day. A Charolais OTM cow from J A Williams, Llechwedd-Ddyrys weighing 845kg made £1301.30. A Charolais younger cow weighing 855kg presented by Roberts & Jones, Parc made £1162.80. A Charolais under 48 months heifer weighing 822kg from Roberts & Jones, Parc made £1331.64.
FAT CATTLE (12)
An entry of 12 fat cattle averaged 198.08ppkg. A heavy British Blue Heifer weighing 567kg presented by G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach, made 247pp/kg, Mr Bound is therefore in receipt of the Briarwood Products LTD prize of £25. Mr Bound also presented a Limousin heifer weighing 548kg making 245ppkg. Evans Bros, Tynewydd, presented three heavy Limousin steers weighing 609kg, 578kg and 598kg making 198ppkg, 195ppkg and 195ppkg respectively. Two Limousins weighing 528kg and 566kg presented by M P Rees, Upper Pentre, made 223ppkg and 210ppkg respectively.

An entry of 6177 prime hogget’s averaged 202.28 pp/kg.

The spring lamb show & sale took place at Welshpool on Monday 14th April 2014. Many thanks to Wynnstay Group Plc, Bibby’s Agriculture, Carrs Billington Agriculture, Rikki Lloyd (Butcher) Welshpool, Shropshire & Montgomery area Suffolk club and the British Charollais sheep society for kindly sponsoring the event. The judge was Mr David Jones, Wrexham.

CULL EWE (2111)
An entry of 2216 culls resulted in averages for the ewes of £62.22 and £86.11 for the rams. The ewes topped at £119 for a pen of three cull ewes from Janet Davies, Tyncoed Bungalow. Closely followed by a price of £115 for one cull ewe from N Sneade, Old Hall. A cull ram from Janet Davies, Tyncoed Bungalow made £122. A E & C Jones from Groespluan Farm presented three cull rams making £121 per head.
Weekly sale of cull sheep to follow immediately after the sale of prime lambs at approx 12 noon.
STORE LAMBS
Store Lambs: An entry of 67 store lambs this week achieving an average price of £33.80 seeing a more difficult trade reflecting the end of the season approaching. Top price was achieved by E R Harris, Pantycaragle of £54.00 for Texel mixed and clean lambs.
Couples: An increased entry to 517 ewes and lambs to last week. A good trade was seen with a number of buyers for each type. Top price of the day was achieved by E Jones, Colwyn for Yearling Lleyn ewes with twin lambs at foot realising £175.
Seeing the first entry of Hoggs and lambs today with Mules with singles at foot selling to £151.00 from E Botwood, Bailey Bedw.
As found Texel cross ewes presented by Davies, Measyneuadd with single lambs at foot selling to £57.50 a life with mule ewes from the same home selling to £61 per life. Full mouth Mule ewes from J E Morgan & Son, Plas with twin lambs at foot sold or £130 or £43 per life.
Cade lambs: 84 cade lambs were entered, gaining an average of £9.70. Top price of the day was £25.00 presented by C Evans & Son, Spring Hill Farm.
Same again next week with store lambs sold from 10.30am followed by ewes and lambs completing with the sale of cade lambs. A large entry expected being Easter bank holiday.
COWS & CALVES
A Seasonal entry of 10 cows and calves met with a sound trade. Topping the market was a British Blue X first calver with a Limousin Bull calf which made £2060 presented by T S Morgan Glanhafon Fach. From the same home was a British Blue X first calver with a heifer calf which made £1620.
Presented by I C & E A Jerman, Pigeon House were 6 cows and calves which sold to a top of £1600 for a Limousin X third calver with a Limousin Bull calf. Two Simmental X cows with Limousin heifer calves from the same home sold for £1490 & £1460.
A break down of all prices achieved were as follows:
£2000+ 1 lot; £1600-£1800 2 lots; £1400-£1600 3 lots; £1200-£1400 2 lots; <£1200 2 lots.
